My friend asked me today... Why in all the Hollywood movies, their phone numbers begins with 555? I went like eerrr...errrr....hhhmmm.. No idea...

Anyone can shed some light to this phenomenal discovery?

Apparently it's just because it's never used in the real world, so people can't say "you used my number in the film" and sue

Is it that simple, why not 888 or 123 or 991... it can't be that the entire US does not have a 555 prefix number...

That's what I remember seeing on a documentary, it was an agreement made between Hollywood and the telephone companies to make life simple as possible, or something to that effect

They could always use numbers like 49068438545867573573295843530985. For some reason I don't think anyone would have that number

(Of course the entire movie would probably be about pressing the telephone)

Yeah, it's been known for them to drop a number so that it's not an actual telephone number in the past too, just adding 1 would do the job too to be honest...

The Americans must be paranoid about being sued, eh? What if there really was a Clark Kent, would the guy sue the producer for impersonation? I remember in some movies, at the ending, just before the credits are out, there is this disclaimer that say "All characters are yada yada yada... this is fiction and not related to so & so"...

If I remember correctly 555 is an actual prefix in the US. As a lady had to have her number changed because Bruce Almighty viewers had seen the number in the movie and called the number looking for god.

Yeah, it's a legal nightmare... In the UK if there's less than 5 people with the name you intend to use, then you have to get the consent of them to use the name apparently, or that's what they said on Shaun of the Dead, which is the reason why most of the characters weren't given surnames...

From IMDB:
"Instead of a phone number with the unused 555 prefix, a phone number that appears on the pager carried by Bruce Nolan (Jim Carrey) was an actual phone number in many US area codes, causing owners of that phone number to be bombarded with calls. For the video release this number was changed to 555-0123"
