Swear words

How do you perceive swear words in movies? Is it all that necessary to curse and swear? Even though people swear on a daily basis, I think that we should not allow swear words in movies as it may be influential on others... Children may think that swearing would be cool; "just like their hero in the movies"...

That's a good question. Personally I don't think swearing is necessary either, but occasionally a few well-placed curses can help with the meaning.

I seriously object to over-swearing using harsh words... a*s and b*tch are ok by me but I'm just looking at the moral part of it... Children actually pick up skills in swearing through watching movies...

Well most swear words are usually in Mature-rated movies, so children shouldn't be watching them in the first place...

Actually when I was a little kid, I learnt most of my swear words at primary school. Had no idea what they meant though...

Round our way everyone swears, it's pretty much a given... Not in polite company of course, but when there's a bit of light-hearted conversation and or work it's always about. I remember being in awe of some of them that my grandfather came out with when I was helping him on the farm... Having said that I generally don't use vulgarity when I'm talking to people unless it's appropriate...

I understand shielding youngsters from certain words and concepts, but if they have a decent head on their shoulders they'll come to their own conclusions about things anyway, so excessive shielding isn't necessary.

As any female will tell you, it's not what you say, but the way that you say it...

The problem with shielding youngsters is that once they are exposed to the "object of evil", they will give it higher status because they perceive it as "underground".

For example, I've noted that a lot of young people who have sex irresponsibily are those who were shielded from the subject as youth. Surprisingly a large amount of teens whose parents were open about sex had a lot more common sense when it came down to it.

Movies isn't the only form - theres also personal conversation, siblings, etc.
