Versatility in a performer

You ever notice that some actors almost always play the same basic person (think John Wayne, who was always John Wayne no matter the movie), and others can slip into any role and make it unique?

Ben Stiller is always the same person in every film--you could probably select random scenes from his movies and edit them together and you'd never see the difference in the characters.

Johnny Depp's characters are nothing alike: Cap'n Jack is nothing like Edward Scissorhands, who is nothing like Inspector Abberline or Ichabod Crane.

Who else do you like for being a chameleon? (Steve Buscemi) And who bores you by always being the same? (Ben Affleck)

Drew Barrymore and Julia Roberts bore me for always being the same. And I like John Cusack as a semi-chameleon.

The one I think of would have to be Adam Sandlar. His movies all seem to be somewhat alike.

George Clooney has tried to be different in his films. Going from comedies like "O Brother Where Art Thou?" to actually changing his appearance for "Syriana". But I think his problem is that he's just too identifiable as George Clooney. He's a lead actor, and that sort of thing works best for supporting actors (though he did win his "Syriana" oscar in the supporting category).

I think Sean Penn tries way too hard to be different in each film and he comes off as being a phony.

As for someone that's too repetitive, I'd pick Jack Nicholson. He's made a string of movies where he was just a cranky old bastard. Though I did think he was great in "The Departed".

I think both Nicole Kidman and Meryl Streep can do about anything and often surprise me. Clint Eastwood can even be a little surprising at times.

Of the ones who never surprise me, Sandler is certainly one and so is Diane Keaton (perpetually zany and weird clothes).

Have to agree with Johnny Depp. I also think that Tom Hanks is a versatile actor.

Definitely Tom Hanks, maybe this is why the man is never without a job. Depp is amazing. I watched Pirates and then watched Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. It was incredible, he didn't even seem like the same man.
