Labelled by some as the most beautiful film ever made, this fantastic visual spectacle from director Zhang Yimou is perhaps the best martial arts film to come out of Asia in many years.
Jet Li (The One, Romeo Must Die) is Nameless, a mysterious warrior in ancient China who appears at the court of the King of Qin claiming to have killed the three most feared assassins in the country. But the King does not believe his story, and gives his own version of events. All the stories are told in flashback and these form the basis of the film.
Each story has a different colour theme attached to it, with colours such as red, yellow, blue, green and black featuring. To some this may seem merely a gimmick, but the dazzlingly beautiful effects that it produces and a huge sense of scale will leave even the most sceptical viewer awestruck, with the eerily beautiful fights in the golden forest and over the blue lake the high points.
Although the central story is a fairly weak premise on which to hang a film and, despite the dubious customary romantic sub-plot, this is not a film you will watch for the story. Instead you would be best advised to sit back, ignore the dialogue and just let this stunningly beautiful film speak for itself.
My Rating: 5/5
