Rowan Atkinson has always been one of those actors who is either comedy genius or juvenile face-puller, depending on your point of view. And this harmless comedy farce is another example of why people either love him or hate him.
Johnny English (Atkinson) is a low-level agent at MI7. But when his inept handling of security results on the death of all the other, more competent, agents, he is suddenly promoted, and immediately finds himself embroiled in a deeply implausible plot involving the theft of the crown jewels and an attempt to hijack the throne of England.
Ably assisted by gadget-happy sidekick Boff and sexy secret agent Lorna Campbell (a rare acting appearance by aussie singer Natalie Imbrulgia), the hapless English sets off to thwart the plans of dastardly evil-doer Pascal Sauvage (John Malkovich, having enormous fun with the most ridiculous French accent known to man).
This is the sort of film that lives or dies on its humour, and whether you find this one funny will very much depend on your opinion of Atkinson and his most famous creation, Mr. Bean. English bears many of the character traits of Mr. Bean, such as an ability to find trouble anywhere and a liking for slapstick humour. To some it will be outrageously funny, to others, hopelessly juvenile. But although this is definitely a film aimed towards the lower end of the market, there’s plenty to enjoy here. Just don’t expect anything too challenging.
My Rating: 3/5
