Pineapple Express

Hey everyone! First time poster here at BigScreenTalk!

Anyhoo, last night I went to see Pineapple Express in Rohnert Park, Ca. Since the movie has been out for a while the theatre was relatively empty, which was fine with me.

The plot: A stoner process server, Dale Denton (Seth Rogen) and his hippie pot dealer, Saul (James Franco) become hunted by the police and a local drug king pin after Denton witnesses a murder.

I have to say this movie was much funnier than I expected it to be. I had heard going in that it was a stoner action flick, and that really is a good way to describe it. There is a lot of pot in this movie but there is also a crapload of action. Lots of bullets flying, lots of dead bodies. The jokes are plentiful if you like stoner humor. If you don't you'll probably still laugh. If you are hugely anti-pot (like a you're-going-to-hell-if-you-smoke-that-joint type of person) then don't even think about watching this movie.

Seth Rogen isn't a great actor per se, but he is likeable in everything I have seen him in. I don't think you'll ever get an Oscar-worthy performance out of him, but that doesn't mean you won't enjoy him on screen.

James Franco, on the other hand, gives a great performance as a free spirited hippie pot dealer, a completely different character than Harry Osborn of the Spiderman movies.

Danny McBride also does a great job playing Red. Red may have been my favorite character of the movie. He's a bit of a dick, but how can you hate someone that celebrates their cat's birthday with a pretty pink home-made cake even after the cat has passed away?

I do have one negative thing to say and that's Rosie Perez. I just have never enjoyed her in anything. Nothing. Ever. And she's in this movie. I know some people absolutely love her but I don't. Oh, I have another negative thing to say and that's Nora Dunn. Thankfully Dunn's role is very limited and she does get off one line that made me laugh, but ever since she refused to perform on SNL the night Dice Clay cohosted I haven't thought much of her. And yes that was 18 years ago, but, hey I can really hold a grudge.

It's hard to give a review without giving spoilers, so if this seems thin on content, it's just because I don't want to ruin anything for you.

Make sure you let me know how you felt about the movie!
