Memoirs of a Geisha

I would call this film a real classic of japanese culture... this film talks about a Japanese child who is torn from her penniless family to work as a geisha house. Despite a treacherous rival who nearly breaks her spirit, the girl blossoms into the legendary geisha Sayuri. Beautiful and accomplished, Sayuri captivates the most powerful men of her day, but is haunted by her secret love for the one man beyond her reach.

I've heard a lot of good about this film even if i haven't seen it myself yet, be sure it will be on my buy list whenever they release it on DVD, I realy think asian cinema is something unique and that deserves a lot of respect.

Memiors of a Geisha

I thought the movie was very interesting. A true geisha was different from the ones that they portrayed in the movie. They altered the appearance of the women to appeal to a modern audience. I bought the DVD and watched the extras. I still enjoyed watching it--I've watched it 3 times!

There was a documentary series last year on television (British, I think) which followed a Japanese girl's journey to becoming a modern day geisha.
It was infinitely more fascinating in some ways than the film. Not nearly as beautiful but you really understood what they went through for the job. It's a tough one.
