| Movie Goer |
When the first Resident Evil film was released in 2002, most people expected it to go the same way as all other videogame adaptations and fade into insignificance. So it came as quite a shock when it grossed over $100 million worldwide. So two years on comes the inevitable sequel and nothing has changed, so anyone expecting more of the same won’t be disappointed. Picking up from where the last film left off, the deadly T-virus has spread throughout Raccoon City, turning most of the population into flesh-eating zombies. With the sinister Umbrella Corporation sealing off the survivors inside the city-sized buffet, it falls to S.T.A.R.S. cop Jill Valentine (Sienna Guillory) and original survivor Alice (Milla Jovovich) to undertake the simple task of locating a scientist’s daughter amongst the wreckage. Of course if it was that simple it wouldn’t be much of a film, so enter bio-engineered killing machine Nemesis, which is determined to stop them. Like the first film, this feels very much like a videogame, with the familiar linear narrative and occasional boss-battle that fans of the videogame will expect. And whether or not you enjoy the film will ultimately depend on whether or not you liked the games. Fans of the series will doubtless enjoy seeing Jill Valentine looking exactly the same as she did in the game, or the impressive scale of the Nemesis, but others may find the story and characters laughable. In the end though, this is undemanding, low-grade stuff, with enough guns to keep its target audience happy. Not a classic by any means, but there are far worse ways to spend two hours. | I was surprised at just how good this movie was! I am really glad that they turned it into more of a political and psychological thriller instead of just us having to watch Alice and Co. run around killing mindless zombies. I really liked the underlying political statements that were made concerning corporations and media control. This flick is great for those seeking a slightly more "intellectual" movie, and for those who simply want to sit back in their stadium seats with some buttered popcorn and have a good time. I hope the next one will be even better....
