The Recruit

This predictable Spy vs. Spy thriller/Colin Farrell vehicle manages to cover almost every cliché in the book and is in desperate need of a spark of originality. Instead, its hard to shake off the feeling that you’ve seen it all before.

When IT genius Farrell is recruited for the CIA by veteran recruiter Al Pacino, he sees it as an opportunity to discover what happened in the death of his father some ten years previously. After undergoing some basic training, he is told by his recruiter that his mission is to uncover a mole working inside the CIA. He also suspects that Pacino was in some way involved in his father’s death. So that’s troubled genius, mentor with a hidden past and rookie on undercover assignment boxes all ticked. And it will come as a surprise to nobody that all is not as simple as first appears.

The main problem with the film lies in its laziness. From the “thriller-by-numbers” script to one of the most uninspiring performances Pacino has ever put in, this film is just going through the motions. It wouldn’t be so disappointing if it was a truly terrible film, but it isn’t. There’s potential in the story, and there’s a nagging feeling that with a little more attention, this could have been a great conspiracy thriller. As it is, it struggles to be any more than average, which is a real shame, as there are some real good moments in the film. The agent training at “The Farm” is a genuinely interesting part of the film, but is all too quickly glossed over. If you’re a fan of the genre, it’s worth a look, but not much more.

My Rating: 2/5

Sometimes actors are better than the movie that they're in. This is one of thsoe occasions. Farrell as the suposedly naive young recruit who turns into a double agent to capture Al Pacino the true criminal is a twist that is telegraphed from the beginning of the movie. The premise of having to go up against yuour mentor in a battle of wits isn't a new one. I'm still unclear as to how Pacino is taped giving an over the top confession. Sometimes smart people, aren't that smart. But he and Farrell do create a good measure of acting ability in a bad script.
