GRR!!! Someone sent me a Peerflix invite using the email address I use only for peerflixtalk.com. That's how I know the sender obtained my address from this site. First of all, most people here probably are already Peerflix members, so spamming us won't accomplish anything. Second, I do not recall agreeing to receive spam when I signed up here. Francesca, please remove me from your list.

| Was the email an affiliate link or were they inviting you to join their friends list? Either way, you currently have your profile settings set to allow members to email you. If you move your cursor over the email button at the bottom of the post above, you will see that it shows your email address. You can disable that feature via your profile: Click on profile (while logged in) Scroll down and you will see an option labeled "Always show my email address" Click the NO bullet and then submit That will remove your address from being viewed by other forum members. If you did receive an affiliate link, can you please forward me a copy via PM or email? Thanks.

| Thanks for your quick response. It was indeed a referral email and I have sent you the text. I disabled my email address as you mentioned. I didn't bother doing so before as I wasn't expecting to get spammed. I'm wondering how many other folks here were lucky recipients of the same email. | ||

| Movie Buff | Gooby What are you calling a 'referral email'? And how does it qualify, in your eyes, as spam? Truly, I want to know, since you felt the need to name her publicly as a spammer, thereby possibly damaging any future friendships she might/may be working on. I don't like spam, either, but I wouldn't name someone in a public forum before contacting them privately, first. Perhaps I am wrong, but I think you owe Francesca an apology. She just joined PFT on December 28th. It is easy to misunderstand the 'rules', if indeed she did make a faux pas. We all have at one time or another. JMHO.

thank you for helping me out on this matter. Indeed, I got Gooby's email from the forum's memberlist, only to add him as a friend. PF sent him the invite the site sends to any members anyone invites, so IMHO this ain't spam. Especially if you're listing your own email whether it be for PFT or PF use. As for damaging future friends I was working on, well I did already receive a couple of emails myself (Thanks Gooby, really you made my day!) from PFT members I was trying to make trades off PF since there are no Canada-US trades, and I think Gooby, you really really helped here. Thanks... :x After the incident, I might have considered getting off PFT. If it were for people like you only on this site, I wouldn't even have come back. But there are nice people like Robin, Matt, Diane, and others, that are very helpful, and help the newbies (myself included), and for them I'm grateful. Thanks guys and dolls  I think all newbies make faux pas (as Robin mentioned), but I don't think this PF invite should be considered spam in itself. Gooby, enjoy this site and your no-friends list. To anyone concerned, I'm sorry if you all considered my invitations as spam, and I have removed the (few) emails I got from the PFT sites off from my friends' list, and you won't have to deal with spammers like me. Sorry for the trouble and especially for trying to have friends. Have a good day. Francesca

| The email I received told me that if I joined Peerflix I would get a free DVD. It did not say "join somone's friends list". There was a referral link in the email inviting me to join Peerflix, even though I am already a member. To me when an email has a referral link, it's a referral email. Spam is defined as unsolicited email. See http://www.spamhaus.org/definition.html for more info. I have strong objections to spam and have had to resort to paying for a service that offers advanced filters just so I can try to get my mailbox down to a manageable level. I didn't sign up to receive unsolicited emails when I joined PFT, nor do I recall reading anything in the TOS saying it was ok to send it. I am sorry if the person who sent it is offended, but I won't apologize for mentioning the email here in the forums. The email address was obtained from my account here, not anywhere else. Did I post the content of the email? No. Did I post the person's email address? No. Did I post their last name? No. Did I say doudouce55 send the email? No. In fact I searched the member list and saw nobody named Frencesca, so I had no idea which member sent it, assuming that person was still an active member here. Normally it's frowned upon to send unsolicited email. So I point out that someone is sending it, and I'm the one who is flamed. lol  I learn something new about the Net every day. And it's true I don't use Peerflix's friends list. I swap DVDs with friends in person. The breakage rate is too high for me to risk my friends' DVDs getting broken in the mail, and in-person swaps are completely free. | ||

| You're quite right, Goobysmoocher, it is frowned upon in general to send unsolicited emails. That's why people don't make their email address public to open sites like this when they sign up. As I have included my email in my profile information for all and sundry to see, it is implied that I am open to receiving it from people on PFT. You didn't, by any chance, make your email public when you initially joined, did you? Because if you did, I'd say you were therefore willing to let PFT members email you. Or am I incorrect?

| I usually stay out of these types of discussions, but this one is too important to bypass. Thank you, snowwfoxx, for stepping in and addressing an unnecessary forum post from goobysmootcher. There are unwritten rules of conduct wherever you operate. doudouce55 was within those rules, in my opinion. She was interested in getting some friends to trade with. No problem there, again, in my mind. How could she know that one member of PFT would not only be not interested in the standard PF Friends invite, but go so far as to get angered by it? Again, IMO, there were plenty of better options for goobysmootcher to use to communicate the outrage that is evident in both the first post here, and the subsequent rant that is a couple of posts above.
