Ditto, KY. I'm glad Joe has found his niche, but I find it far more wanting than Peerflix, which is still working for me amazingly well.

So far, I haven't found a reason to go to SwitchDiscs yet myself. I will continue to see who ends up on top for peer to peer service. PF has a lot of issues but it has worked for me and still does.

I don't use peerflix anymore so you won't see me saying anything about them.
You don't need to signup to see how rediculusly inflated things are there

Please don't count me in your estimate of "It's just not a model most of us like." Like eBay, Switchdiscs is a free-market system. Like any market, online or off, people put a price on an item and others choose to buy or shop elsewhere. I like the free-market system (if BestBuy is too expensive on a particular item, I may buy it from Walmart or where-ever I find it cheaper).

I'm OK with Peerflix setting arbitrary prices (because I'm lazy), but I'm not opposed to setting my own prices and shopping around.

Robin

I respect your point of view, Man In Black. However, I don't feel it really is a free-market system or model in that SwitchBucks cannot be exchanged for currency. If I trade several discs on the system but find that everything I want is vastly overpriced, I cannot cash out and buy from BestBuy. Of course, one could say this about Peerflix, but the majority of Peerbux ratings are generally appropriate to the used items being bartered.

i've been looking at switchdiscs, mainly for games...

my experience so far:
selection is pretty slim this early in the game. prices can be pretty inflated.
but my main problem is the search and browse feature sucks and the site is ho-friggin-rendously slow.

SwithDisks

I have a balance of switchbucks. But nothing left that I want to get. So I wait for new items to be listed.

Thus, I am not giving up on Peerflix. There are actually DVDs available that I want to get.

One good thing about joining severl of these: A DVD that doesn't move on one of them can then be listed on all of them. More chances to trade it...

Exactly!
I signed up with SwitchDiscs (yes, they accept Canadians!!!!!!!!!!!!! :P )
hoping to get rid of some Peerflix movies no one wanted... and it worked... so far.

It's true there isn't much activity on switchdiscs, they are new. If more people were to give a try, one day it might just have a better selection, and more members of course.

What I REALLY ike about switchdiscs is that, if you have a question about a listed title, you can actually click on a link that says "contact member" and directly ask the trader for the information required. Something that PF just didn't offer, and still doesn't --- to my knowledge at least.

You know, I bet that most of these criticisms about the lack of inventory on SD were first uttered/typed about PF when they first started. Most likely about any trading site when they started, for that matter.

SD just started January 31, 2006. What, do you expect Chris to start out with 10,000 + in inventory? Chris is doing this on his own, as far as I know. He didn't get $8 million in investment funds as did PF. I think he is doing a hell of a lot better job in the short amount of time that his site has been open and functional.

In a peer-to-peer system, you need members to increase the inventory.

As someone on the SD forum said (yes, SD already has a built-in forum), the beauty of setting your own price is that if you have a disc you really want to get rid of, you can lower the price by however much you want, lower than other members with the same disc. You can't do that on PF. And as Francesca pointed out, you can actually contact the member to ask questions about a certain item. Negotiation on price isn't out of the question either, because of this communication feature.

As JoeBlack said, Chris is hands-on and does respond to your questions personally, IN A TIMELY MANNER. Counter that one, PF.

Joe may be a bit - ok, a lot more aggressive than I, but I, like JoeBlack, am fully behind switchdiscs.com AND Chris. I have already offered to help him make this company grow anyway I can. And you know what? I KNOW he will respond. What he says in response, who knows? But can you say that you know PF will respond to anything? Ever? Experience has already answered this question: NO.

Thanks for the positive feedback Robin...

You are correct in that as of right now it is pretty much a one man show as far as daily operations are concerned. We do have a great team of developers that are working on the site and they are doing an amazing job.

You are also correct in that we do not have any VC money funding the site...and I like it that way. By not having a VC board of directors to report to I am able to make things happen much faster. I listen to the members and not a round table of executives who have never even tried the service. We have enough private funding for now to further develop the site and market just enough to keep getting new members everyday. When we feel we have a great service in place we may be willing to look into VC money to help us REALLY market the site and take our membership level into the 100s of thousands and maybe even millions. But with enough word of mouth marketing by our happy members that might never be needed.

I'm always looking for members who are interested in helping the site grow and improve. So if anyone has ideas for the site or ideas for getting new members let me know...we may even be able to work up some type of reward system.

cheers,
Chris
