ae.boehm's review

I have signed up with SwitchDiscs to try it out. I probably wouldn't pull out of PeerFlix, but just use them both.

It took me a while to get registered, because I didn't receive any e-mail with a confirmation code. Finally, after two e-mails to customer support, they handled it manually.

I entered my want list first. Then entered my have list.
Both I found somewhat cumbersome, mainly because it is hard to compare versions. Also, I was pleased to see that they offer a suggested "SwitchBucks" value, however there didn't appear to be a way to compare to what others listed for a particular item.

I was also pleased because it turns out that I have quite a few of CDs that I don't want anymore. So I posted those, but most my DVD collection that I had to trade has dwindled from PeerFlix. I'm hoping to turn unwanted CDs into wanted DVDs.

It did appear that there were a handful of DVDs that were available on SwitchDiscs that weren't on PeerFlix. (Though a couple were outrageously priced.)

It has just been a couple of days, but there has been no activity yet.
I'll try to remember to update this when I get a chance.

I saw that there were a few sets of the xfiles show on there. Lowestt price was 50 bucs. Funny thing is that you can buy them used on amazon for around $40-$50 anyway. Same thing goes for movies valued at 30 bucs. You could find them used for $10 or less probably.

You can't compare the switchbucs price to a new Amazon price and say "why would I pay 30 switchbucs when it costs $18 on Amazon brand new". You get the same value for the discs you trade so it all evens out. You're trading switchbucs not dollars. Rumor has it they are doing away with the setting your own price thing that way switchbucs values are consistent across the network.

Switchbucs are just used to give value to the discs on the network. If you send out discs of high value you're going to get a lot of switchbucs. You can then use those switchbucs to get discs of the same or lesser value.

Does that make sense?

I like the idea of trading cds for points and then getting DVDs. Is there a sign-up incentive like Peerflix's free movie?

Um, not really. Not when the prices are so inflated that they don't resemble reality. I think it will keep a lot of people from using the service, frankly...it did me.

Well then you don't get it.

If you put a newer title like King Kong on the site and made it available to switch you will get like 20-30 switchbucs for it. You will then have enough switchbucs to get a disc of equal value so probably another newer title like Hostel.

Or you could switch two older titles for like 10 switchbucs each which would then give you enough to get one newer title.

I mean they could set the value of a newer title to be worth like 100 switchbucs and an older title to like 50 switchbucs and it would still work.

The prices aren't inflated like you say because there is no real money involved it's just switchbucs and all the values of discs are equal across the network so you get 100% value every time.

You actually get a more relevant value for your discs on switchdiscs then you do on peerflix. Titles that are worth over $30 will only get you 3 peerbux while a title that is worth $15 will also get you 3 peerbux...now explain to me how that is fair and not "deflated".

No free DVD...but they have a program called fast switchbucs. Basically you can send in up to 3 discs directly to switchdiscs when you signup and they will credit your account the appropriate amount of switchbucs when they receive them. It's a way to get some switchbucs right away without having to wait for someone to request something from you.

Well, that would be true, if it wasn't for the fact that SwitchBucs are sold 1:1. At least that's what I remember.
Please help me get that.

Akira11, that's exactly what I mean. If you pay cash for Switchbucks, you will pay over retail for many discs.

JoeBlack, you've always been from the beginning a SwitchDiscs fan, but even with the problems PF is having, I wouldn't switch. I did set up an account, but I was thoroughly unimpressed. Their recommended prices were even further off than anything I've seen on Peerflix...sorry.

Well I don't think anyone is going to be buying $30 switchbucs but I could see buying like 5 if that's all I needed to get a hot new release.

To each his/her own.

Everyone posts their peerflix stats so maybe I should post my SwitchDiscs stats...

My SwitchDiscs.com Stats:

54 - Sent - ALL received in perfect condition (crazy what a good mailer will do)
65 - Received
2 - Broken due to sender using a "peermailer" like mailing method (they won't last long at SwitchDiscs which is a good thing)
6 - BRAND NEW still in original case and sealed
